André Avila, BSc (Hons)

André Avila completed his Bachelor of Science at The University of Western Australia, majoring in Neuroscience and Finance. In 2019, he undertook international studies at the University of Oslo and BI Norwegian Business School in Norway. He went on to achieve first-class honours through Curtin University and the Perron Institute, where his research focused on cognition in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), specifically investigating qEEG networks and neurofeedback as a treatment for chronic mTBI symptoms.

Currently a PhD candidate at Curtin University through the Perron Institute, André’s research explores brain inflammation and neurometabolites in chronic mTBI symptoms using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He is also involved in a clinical trial assessing neurofeedback as a therapeutic intervention. Alongside his PhD, André works as a research assistant in the stroke research group at the Perron Institute, contributing to machine learning segmentation analysis of arterial calcification in a novel AI model.

With over three years of experience in neuromodulation, André has conducted qEEG brain scans, neurofeedback, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). He is a certified rTMS technician at Sherpah Clinic, providing treatment for depression and other mental health conditions, and is completing his QEEG-Diploma under the mentorship of Dr Mary Tracy in Northern California.

An internationally recognised speaker, André has presented at several conferences, including an invited talk at the 2024 Suisun Neuroscience Summit in Northern California. He has also been invited to speak at prominent events in Perth and has received awards for his science communication, including prizes at the Symposium for West Australian Neuroscience (SWAN) and the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) conferences.
